When to use a REGENERATIVE DC Drive and can it be used instead servo Motor systems?

REGENERATIVE DC Drives are actually two Drives in one unit using SCRs; one of them moves the DC Motor in one direcction, the other one moves the DC Motor in the oposite direction, that explain their price,  and can be used instead of servo drives & motors in most of appilications, and they are cheaper than Servo Equipment.

REGENERATIVE Speed Controls for 1/4 ~ 7.5HP - 90V/180V DC Motors with PM or Shunt Wound Field; Control Speed/Torque and Rotation direction electronically. 

Regenerative Drives are used in many applications where the Motor needs to move in both directions without Electromechanical Contactors; Plus pumping back power to the Power Company during deceleration or when stopping, and save energy (Money).

Its 4 quadrants operation allows the motor to operate in both directions at full power, REGENERATIVE DC DRIVES CAN REPLACE SERVO-DRIVES IN MAY APPLICATIONS.

 

When choosing between a REVERSIBLE DC drive (which reverses the direction of rotation using electromechanical contactors) and a REGENERATIVE one (which performs the reversal electronically, without electromechanical components)—both being good options—we must first consider the following: IF...

 

● The motor does NOT need to reverse its direction of rotation frequently

 

● The motor does NOT require active, controlled deceleration under heavy loads

 

● It is NOT a problem for the Machine to come to a complete stop before changing its direction of rotation

 

● Rapid reversal is NOT required

 

● There is no issue with using electromechanical contactors and an AAPB board (anti-plugging protection)

 

If you answered NO to these questions, then you need a REVERSIBLE DC drive!

 

HOWEVER, if the machine needs to move back and forth continuously...

 

● The machine needs to stop and start frequently.

 

The machine requires rapid reversal.

 

The machine needs to stay in motion and reverse direction quickly.

 

You do not wish to use electromechanical components.

 

The loads are "overhauling" loads (loads that drive the motor, such as in hoisting or lowering applications—e.g., an elevator).

 

Then, your machine needs a REGENERATIVE DC DRIVE!
