DC Motors & DC Drives are equipment that have being around for many years, actualy that was the only way to control the speed of a motor for many years in the past and they worked well, they still around in many different applications because they are good and because their lower prices and reliability.
The very first advantage is their cost, DC Drives are cheaper than AC Drives for the same HP. AC Motors could be cheaper but the AC Drives are pricey. So DC Drives & Motors are a cheaper way to solve a problem where you need to control the Speed and/or Torque or Both for your appplication.
The second advantage is DC Drives are really very simple equipment and work very well in most applications, their componets are simple and easy to adjust and adapt to your needs.
The third advantage is their characteristics, DC Motors give FULL Torque from low speed to ful speed, AC motors lack Torque at low speeds, You can buy a AC Vector Drive to have better torque but again, the Drive will be more expensive than a DC Drive!
